COVID 19 Vaccinations

We are thrilled that COVID vaccines are available for ships visiting
Puget Sound ports.

Initial vaccines and booster shots (Johnson&Johnson, Pfizer, and Moderna) are

offered and administered by Discovery Health. They specialize in maritime

medicine, so seafarers are who they serve!

For merchant crews interested in onboard vaccinations:

  • Contact Discovery Health directly at least seven days before your visit to schedule these onboard visits (Bridget DeMouy (bdemouy@discoveryhealthmd.com) or Megan Allen (immunizations@discoveryhealthmd.com)). If you need to cancel or reschedule your onboard vaccination, please let Discovery Health know at least 12 hours before your scheduled appointment.

  • If you are interested in booster shots, please note the following:

    • If you received a J&J shot initially, you will be eligible for a booster shot two months after your first shot. For example, assume today is October 27, 2021. If your first shot was on or before August 27, 2021, you are now eligible for a booster.

    • If you are eligible for a booster, you can now “mix and match” your second shot as long as your first shot is approved in the US. That means if your first shot was J&J, your booster shot can be J&J, Moderna, or Pfizer. Discovery Health will ask you what your preference is when you schedule your booster shots. If you have no preference, Discovery Health will default to the vaccine they have on hand for that day.

    • Boosters are not approved yet for those who are fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved outside of the US. For example if someone has already received two doses of AstraZenca, we cannot provide them with a booster in the United States.

For merchant crews interested in getting vaccinated on shore in Seattle:

  • Please note that the mobile clinic at Terminal 90 is no longer offering vaccinations at this time.

  • While scheduling onboard vaccinations with Discovery Health is the best way to get many crew vaccinated at once, it is also possible that our Seafarers' Center can arrange transportation to onshore vaccination sites when needed. Discovery Health offers walk-in vaccines in Puyallup, WA, and some local pharmacies offer vaccines.

  • The Center welcomes donations for transportation, but those are not required.

Vaccines and booster shots are free to merchant seafarers. All seafarers need to register

with an id with a birthdate. They will receive the COVID vaccine card once they are done,

and that information will also be registered in a database in Washington State

in case they lose the card.

A Note for Cruise Ship crews: Discovery Health can provide vaccinations for

crews working on cruise ships in the Puget Sound. This can be done by

scheduling a mass vaccine clinic or on a smaller basis. Please contact Taylor

Pellizzari at Discovery to discuss scheduling and costs.

(tpellizzari@discoveryhealthmd.com).

A Note about Onboarding or Offboarding crews: Vaccines are also available for free to crew members beginning or ending their contracts as long as crew have a valid visa. Please confirm with your shipping agent first. Then, contact the Seafarers Center to help arrange transportation and schedule an appointment.

A Note about COVID Testing: in development.

A Note about Visas: if any member of your crew has an expired US visa, s/he may apply for an emergency medical parole granted through the US Customs and Border Patrol. This will grant the crew member(s) access to US soil long enough to receive a COVID vaccine. Please have the agent work with CPB to make that happen. We can provide transportation to seafarers to pick up their emergency paroles after those have been granted.

This is a developing process, so some of this may change over time. Feel free to reach out with questions and to ask about the links for upcoming berthings in Seattle. We are grateful this is now available for all of you beloved, brave souls!
